Elongated Chile is a country on the west coast of South America. The country is situated entirely in the southern hemisphere; summer runs from December to March. The north is one of the driest areas in the world: the Atacama desert. In some places it has never rained. The further south you go in Chile, the wetter and colder it gets. The coldest place is Fire Island, not counting the high Andes. The centre of Chile, with the capital Santiago, has a pleasant Mediterranean climate. Warm (30-35 °C) in summer and mild and wet in winter. There on the coast it can rain at least 2000 mm per year.
