The climate in Austria
Austria is a small country with considerable climatic variations. The west, where the Alps are, has a high mountain climate. Winters are severe and summers cool. The influence of the Atlantic Ocean is noticeable in this area. In the summer it rains a lot. Winters are rich in snow, which helps make the provinces of Tyrol and Vorarlberg popular ski areas. Heading east, the moderating influences of the ocean and mountains lessens. The climate gets more continental features. Vienna, on the border with Slovakia, has warm summers and cold winters. In the sheltered south of Austria, the valleys of Carinthia have a pleasantly warm, almost Mediterranean climate.
